“Leadership is the art of getting people to want to do what must be done.”
Jim Collins, Author of Good to Great
We desire to see communities, organizations and businesses transformed through great leadership. It must start with self-leadership and a personal commitment to personal growth and life-long learning. You cannot share with your team what you do not have.
Whether you lead a team of employees or a volunteer team in a social sector, your people have the same core needs as all humans. Harvard Business Review has shown that employees or volunteers who have more of their needs met are more engaged, are more likely to stay, are less stressed, more focused, have more life satisfaction and bring more positive energy to their work.
Unfortunately, this same study of 19,000 + workers showed that only 7% of people had their four core needs met at work.
This translates into poorly engaged employees and volunteers. The Gallup organization has been studying employee engagement around the world for years. Their recent surveys have shown that only 20% of Canadian employees are engaged, slightly better than the global average of 15%.
So, we need more transformational leaders. Today’s workforce, especially younger workers and volunteers, do not thrive with the industrial era transactional leadership style.
